Student Environmental Center (SEC) is a Registered Student Organization at Southern Illinois University Carbondale dedicated to the struggle for environmental justice.

Through our campaigns we hope to help SIUC become a leader in sustainability while educating the university community and providing this generation's fresh crop of starry eyed dreamers with the necessary knowledge and skills to become tomorrows dedicated activists.

Southern Illinois Alliance for Fair Food

Since fall semester of 2006, SEC has teamed up with other campus, community and faith organizations to create the Southern Illinois Alliance for Fair Food (SIAFF), an organization working in solidarity with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) and the Student Farmworker Alliance (SFA).

SEC members helped host a benefit show earlier this year that raised awareness and over a $1,000 for the CIW, took part in the McDondald's campaign victory celebration in Chicago and the first Burger King protests that followed. SEC member and SIAFF bottomliner Kandace Vallejo sits on the stearing committee of the Student Farmworker Alliance.

In 2005, after a four year boycott, the CIW won a historic victory against Taco Bell, the largest buyer of Florida tomatoes, that nearly doubled farmworker wages and put in place an enforceable code of conduct for growers that the workers play an active role in shaping.

In 2007, without having to go as far as calling a boycott, the CIW reached the same agreement with McDonalds and is already set its sights on Burger King.

The CIW also has an Anti-Slavery Campaign that has "resulted in freedom for more than a thousand tomato and orange pickers held in debt bondage," and the prosecution of
