Student Environmental Center (SEC) is a Registered Student Organization at Southern Illinois University Carbondale dedicated to the struggle for environmental justice.

Through our campaigns we hope to help SIUC become a leader in sustainability while educating the university community and providing this generation's fresh crop of starry eyed dreamers with the necessary knowledge and skills to become tomorrows dedicated activists.

"One more bike,
one less car!"

Saluki Cycles is a free bike rental program initiated by SEC in 2005 to offer students an alternative to daily automobile use, while also educating the university community on the economic, social and environmental benefits of cycling.

Climate change is serious business folks, and the way we live our day-to-day lives can be active resistence to corporate sponsored environmental degradation – by refusing to contribute to oil and automotive industries whenever possible. Besides, riding bikes is fun!

The Saluki Cycles fleet includes ten yellow, single-speed cruisers and two kick-bikes which can rented by students FREE for 42 hour intervals. Check out the REC base camp site for details.

How did we do it?

In 2005, SEC member Ryan Campbell recieved the National Wildlife Federation's Campus Ecology Fellowship to launch Saluki Cycles.

In 2006, SEC members Jon Dyer and Justin Skord received the MTV ThInk Venture Grant to expand the program. SEC is currently looking for an additional site to set up shop. So, now is the perfect time to get involved!

Getting the program rolling was a collaborative effort of SEC, the Southern Illinois Center for a Sustainable Future, the SIUC REC Center and the Bike Surgeon.
