Student Environmental Center (SEC) is a Registered Student Organization at Southern Illinois University Carbondale dedicated to the struggle for environmental justice.

Through our campaigns we hope to help SIUC become a leader in sustainability while educating the university community and providing this generation's fresh crop of starry eyed dreamers with the necessary knowledge and skills to become tomorrows dedicated activists.

"So, what's SEC?"

SEC is a Registered Student Organization at SIUC that has been active for over 25 years, working on a wide spectrum of local and national issues. From blockading a logging road in the Shawnee National Forest for months to stop new logging from taking place to lobbying state legislators on issues that conscern students, SEC has done it all at one point or another.

Redefining the "Environment"

SEC recognizes the interconnectedness of all movements for justice and therefore includes social, political, cultural and economic conditions in our definition of “environment”. The bottom line is the same cultural and economic forces that perpetuate the exploitation of people are the same that fuel the degradation of our natural environment.

“Without dismantling the basic tools of all oppression – classism, racism, sexism, heterosexism and ablism – we don't stand a chance..."

...sounds serious, but we have fun too!

SEC provides students with a way to make meaningful friendships that revolve around issues that are important to them. As we move off campus and into our communities as organizers, some of the friends made today may prove to be life-long allies in the struggle for social and environmental justice.

In addition to providing experience working on important environmental issues, SEC tries to serve as a social hub for those interested working towards a more free and just world.
